Sensei Ron Hicks, 6th Dan, Chief Instructor
Ron started training in September 1971 at the Bath club, under Sensei Brian Middleton. He trained in Exeter for four years while studying at the University of Exeter. He then moved to Tamworth in the Midlands where he and Rob Welsh ran the Castle Bromwich club. He moved to Kuwait in 1985 and helped set up the Kuwait Karate Federation, just prior to the invasion by Iraq in 1990. He went back to Kuwait for a further 3 years before returning to Bath permanently in 1994, where he has trained ever since.
Sensei Kieran Shore, 4th Dan, Club Secretary
Kieran is a KUGB qualified instructor who has been CRB checked. He began his Karate training in 1985 at Bath Karate Club under the instruction of Sensei Brian Middleton and in 1990 achieved his 1st Dan under the late Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda who also graded him to 2nd and 3rd Dan, and he was graded to 4th Dan in 2008 under Sensei Andy Sherry and Sensei Bob Poynton. Over the years Kieran has been fortunate to train under many other world-renowned karateka such as Senseis Osaka, Tanaka, Kanazawa, Kawasoe, Terry O’Neill , Bob Rhodes, Billy Higgins, Dave Hazard and the late Sensei Tabata. Kieran has been a member of the KUGB Central Region Kata squad since 2000 and regularly makes the trip to the Midlands with some of his Bath Karate Club colleagues to train under Sensei Frank Brennan 7th Dan. Kieran has enjoyed competing over the years and was the Southern Region Kata champion in 1988 and still keeps his hand in by competing in Kata at the KUGB National Championships.
Sensei Rob Davis, 3rd Dan, Club Treasurer
Rob is a KUGB qualified instructor who has been CRB checked. Rob began his karate training in 1973 at Bath Karate Club under the instruction of Sensei Brian Middleton and Larry Vincent. In 1984 he achieved his 1st Dan under the late Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda. He was graded by Senseis Andy Sherry and Bob Poynton to 2nd and 3rd Dan. Rob has been fortunate to train under many other world renowned karateka such as Senseis Enoeda, Tomita, Kawasoe, O’Neill, Rhodes, Higgins, Brennan. Rob has been a member of the Central Regional Kata squad since 2002.
Sensei Dave Forde, 3rd Dan, Club Instructor
Dave started Karate with Brian Middleton in 1976, then in the 1980’s started kickboxing to supplement his karate training under Sensei David Clatworthy. Dave gained his 1st Dan under Sensei Keinosuke Enoeda, his 2nd Dan under Sensei Andy Sherry and his 3rd Dan under Andy Sherry and Bob Poynton, with Frank Brennan residing. In 1978, at the age of 14, Dave was selected to represent Bath in the kumite team which placed 4th in the championship. In the same year Dave was ‘Bath Karate Club Student of the Year’, this honour being repeated in 2011 which he shared with Sensei Rob Davis. In the South West Championship of 1988, Dave won the under-black belt kumite title and in the senior black belt kumite always placed in the top 5 (when not disqualified!). In the 1990’s Dave spent a period of time training with Sensei Bryan Evans, and in 1994 and 1995 he was selected for the KUGB Southern Region Squad. Dave has trained with some of the top Japanese and British Instructors such as Sensei Osaka, Tanaka, Tabata and of course Master Enoeda. The British Instructors include, Senseis Andy Sherry, Terry O’Neill, Bob Poynton, the late Steve Cattle, Bob Rhodes, Billy Higgins, Frank Brennan, Garry Harford, Ronnie Christopher and Dave Hazard. Dave is a member of the Central Region Kata Squad.
Sensei Mark Walker, 3rd Dan, Club Instructor
Our grading examiner is Sensei Bob Poynton (8th Dan) and Senseis John Bruce (5th Dan) and Holly Stirling (5th Dan) are visiting instructors to the club. A number of the senior grades train regularly with Sensei Frank Brennan (8th Dan) as members of the Central Region Kata Squad.
